I really wish Beethoven hadn’t put any metronome markings in the Hammerklavier. We can’t make them work but we can’t ignore them either, and whatever we do is seen (and judged) through the lens of these numbers. (And we’re lucky that’s the only sonata to have them!!)

Rachmaninov No. 1 – one of my favourite concerti of all times 🥰 tonight with The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder at TRCH. Really excited to be joining Sir Mark’s farewell tour.

New piano for the DresdnerPhilharmonie!! ❤️🎹 11 superb Steinway & Sons pianos, with the very first one (!) being the one – with a beautiful, long, singing tone, but also with the power and projection needed for playing big concerti. Will post some music on the piano tomorrow 😀

Dear all, as promised, some music on the new Steinway 😀 Rachmaninov’s glorious Prelude in C-sharp minor. It’s just the phone mic, but I hope something of the richness of the sound comes through. DresdnerPhilharmonie Steinway & Sons

One of Rachmaninov’s less-known preludes – Op. 23 No. 1 in F# minor ❤️ Played my last concert this season at Petworth Festival, this is from the practising time onstage 😀

Rachmaninov Prelude Op. 23 No. 2: majestic, extrovert, bursting with energy. It reminds me of his song “Spring Waters”, with its unstoppable, effervescent drive. The middle section shows Rachmaninov’s amazing multi-layered writing – like 1.5 pianos playing simultaneously 🥰

Rachmaninov’s Prelude Op. 23/3 (from the middle). A wonderfully story-telling prelude, which could have easily been an Etude-Tableau. The ghostly polyphony towards the end is exquisite – and Rachmaninov derives everything in this piece from the same 5-note motif!

Rachmaninov – Prelude Op. 23 No. 6: particularly close to my heart, as it was one the pieces my late grandma used to play. I was 7 or 8 – my first encounter with Rachmaninov ❤️❤️ Rachmaninov said he wrote on the day his daughter Irina was born in 1903 🫠

Rachmaninov – Prelude in C minor, Op. 23/7. A winter storm, sometimes hushed, sometimes bursting out. And so much emotion within (wouldn’t be Rachmaninov otherwise!)… The moment a melody appears above the figurations at 0:25 is magical – a glimpse of stars through the snow
