We're excited to share we have raised a $3.3M Seed Round led by 1kx, with participation from Shima Capital, Hashed, Matchbox DAO, Ready Player DAO, and several angels! Read on to learn how we approached funding the creation of a decentralized world.

In 2021, we quit our jobs to work full time on Citadel. For over year, we self-funded everything. We were pretty sure we could pull it off, but we knew we’d need to take a portion of mint funds and marketplace royalties to stay afloat after we launched something.

Part of the founding motivation for The Citadel was the belief that there was a healthier way for founders and communities to build together. For a movement built on promoting trustless tech, there was far too much trusting of untrustworthy teams in 2021. That needed to change.

Our goal was always to safeguard as much of the community’s funds as possible. We planned to do this by trustlessly sending at least 70% of our genesis mint to the DAO treasury, which would be controlled by the community through onchain governance.

But even using the remaining 30% to fund development never sat completely right with us. Our community comes first and we're honored by their faith in us. We want them invest into the world itself rather than a kickstarter to fund its development.

So our new plan is to trustlessly send 100% of all funds from the genesis mint to the DAO treasury.

There won't be any blackholes that eat funds, nor any "learnings" to be had on the community's dime. Not only will the Citadel DAO own and govern the world contracts directly, it will have full control and transparency over all funds contributed by the community.

This round also gives us the opportunity do things that were not possible when bootstrapping. The Citadel has always had an ambitious vision, but now we have the resources to realize the full potential of that vision. This is what next week’s announcement will cover.

The expanded vision also means expanding the team, and we're actively hiring talented and passionate folks that are excited about building novel player-driven worlds. We're hiring across disciplines — we create amazing roles for amazing people. If that's you, please reach out!
