Our trees have done well - thanks to decent rainfall but regular watering has been necessary. Out of the 12 trees we have lost one which we will replace later this year. They really complement the trees already on the green nd will provide some spring time grub for the birds.

Beginning to cut back some of the meadow but lots still going on! Plans afoot to tip the balance on grass/flowers for next year. Definitely need more yellow rattle and some autumn clearing to grab back some bare soil for a summer show! Barn owls have really benefitted this year!

Watching charms of Goldfinches, surf the wind and ride the wildflower waves today, made me feel as if, I was riding the crest of a wave myself! At this time of year, they arrive in flocks, known as charms (my favourite collective noun), to feast on Knapweed seed, their seasonal

Started clearing some of the 'big' grass to make space for the lovely seed - gonna be a long job but loving seeing the seed bank from this year-s growth. Onwards and upwards #santondownham #biodiversity

A good example of the tokenism that so often passes for 'action' on biodiversity collapse: a 'bug hotel', plonked in a garden of a) Sterile lawns b) Alien plants It's shocking, I know, but what wildlife *really* needs is actual wild, natural HABITAT.

One year ago, this 1/4 acre was just an area of mown grass. I then took the topsoil off, formed some banks, made a wildlife pond, sowed the area with wildflowers & planted many native trees & shrubs. When I visited this week to carry out the first hay cut, it’s apparent that the

After a very cold week we have put down the final seed (lots, of yellow rattle) πŸ’› and the meadow (and us) can rest! Just the new trees to tend to - we lost one that will need replacing. It's been an exciting year and fingers crossed 2025 will be amazing on #billsmeadow !

Fabulous day checking in on the trees we planted last year! Clearing twitch, making bug hotels and seeing the village at its best - can you see the moon?
