“How would people spend a basic income?” We're glad you asked. Today, we're launching #BasicIncomeBoughtMe, a social media campaign that mobilizes research on the Ontario Basic Income Pilot to highlight how participants talked about spending their #BasicIncome payments.

The project has a few objectives: to mobilize existing basic income research, raise awareness about basic income as a progressive policy option, amplify the stories of those with lived experience, and challenge harmful stereotypes about poverty and income support programs.

#BasicIncomeBoughtMe is about agency and dignity, grounded in the belief that people have the right to spend basic income how they see fit. Ultimately, we want to show that better policy responses to income insecurity not only exist, but are actionable and impactful.

It's week one of #BasicIncomeBoughtMe, and we're talking about the food - and food security - #BasicIncome afforded so many.🍎 For this Ontario Basic Income Pilot participant, basic income purchased a full fridge, freezer, and cupboards for the first time in their life.

For many, #BasicIncome meant being able to buy treats that might otherwise be a luxury. For this person, #BasicIncomeBoughtMe the freedom to splurge on cashews - their son's favourite! - without having to sacrifice food security.

We heard from many #BasicIncome recipients that having increased financial security opened up a world of choice that they didn't have before. For this OBIP participant, #BasicIncomeBoughtMe the income to choose more nutritious foods, and the ability to eat at every meal. 🍽

Today marks the end of our first week of #BasicIncomeBoughtMe. Like others we introduced this week, basic income offered this family food security, and the peace of mind that there would always be enough to go around. Tune in next week - we've got many more stories to share!
