In amongst chatter about tax giveaways today we launch our FDA union research on the state of pay in the civil service and the effect on our members. Some truly shocking statistics that show the need for change #fdastateofpay

“Ministers are saying to civil servants they have to break the law” Dave Penman told BBC News (UK) that proposals from ministers to instruct civil servants to ignore ECHR rulings are unacceptable.

Today the Chancellor made a choice to prioritise politically motivated tax cuts over proper investment in public services. Civil servants can’t keep doing more with less – the best way to genuinely increase productivity and ultimately deliver better public services is to invest

Ministers have an obligation to ensure that civil servants never feel conflicted between their obligations under the Civil Service Code & instructions from elected ministers. Yet that is exactly where the Rwanda Bill puts civil servants.

Crazy that Dave Penman FDA union are having to threaten to take government court to protect staff who may be forced to break international law. At what point did we collectively shrug our shoulders and say ‘Ah well, it’s only international law - we can take it or leave it’?

The FDA has today launched a judicial review of the Safety of Rwanda Act. We do not welcome this action, but neither are we prepared to shy away from it as we must protect the interests of our members and the integrity of the Civil Service Code.

Jeremy Hunt said he wants to cut the the civil service by 70,000. No focus on outcomes, no recognition of what the civil service is expected to achieve, and absolutely no logic. Top down, evidence-free micromanagement is no way to run a government. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…

Couldn’t be prouder of all those public servants responding to the “far right thuggery” over the last week. From our courageous police & emergency services, literally on the front line, to those effecting “swift justice” including our members in CPS. Our country thanks you.

Today’s govt announcement is “heavy on rhetoric and light on substance”, Dave Penman tells BBC Radio 5 Live “It’s good that the Prime Minister is setting out a vision for transforming public services, but he’s making claims of £45bn worth of savings which I think no-one would recognise”

Dave Penman (@fdagensec) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The civil service has grown because governments have wanted to do more. Post Brexit the UK needed thousands more border guards to meet the new demands of EU border checks. The government can have a smaller civil service but it will need to decide what it will stop delivering

Dave Penman (@fdagensec) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Confirmation of what we’ve long suspected. If Reform get in to government, they’ll adopt an American style politicisation of the civil service. As we’ve seen with the Trump administration, people brought in to lead key parts of the state not on ability, but on belief & loyalty.
