Good news! This morning, L.A. City Council moved to protect the city's affordable and rent-stabilized housing stock from the harmful impacts of Airbnb and VRBO.

L.A. City's Home-Sharing Ordinance (HSO) will now be amended to include a private right of action for impacted individuals, and an electronic verification system for all short-term rentals (STRs).

The private right of action will allow affected citizens to sue illegal STR operators and noncompliant platforms (like Airbnb), while the electronic verification system will interface with hosting platforms to automatically prevent illegal STRs from being booked.

Over the years, our friends Better Neighbors LA found that short-term rental hosts have been using dubious exemptions to skirt registration requirements, and that many listings are using invalid registration numbers.
