I write about, and photograph, nature in Gwent and I would like to encourage small land holders to leave parts of their land ungrazed to benefit all wildlife.

#LabourParty Please review housing policy. There are enough buildings in this country. The problem is that people own more than one. Stop understanding the world through the idea of markets alone.eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%…

Our swallow pair had just 2 chicks but both have fledged and they are good and strong with mum and dad looking after them well. There will be another brood....

Yesterday afternoon there were 5 marbled white butterflies in our field. It is another 1st since letting our grass go ungrazed and uncut. Such a simple thing to do and such an impact in last 3 years. This is the 5th new butterfly species sighted. None rare but all precious!

Noticed this banded demoiselle in the field yesterday evening. It was hard to capture its beauty on my phone while standing in a clump of very prickly thistles but then it landed in a patch of light! Here it is iridescent and splendid despite the limitations of my phone cam.

A Painted Lady was among the resident butterflies yesterday. The native butterflies are late emerging this year but very welcome!

The butterflies are coming out now. This splendid Comma posed nicely for me yesterday. What a joy it is to see them. πŸ’•

The butterflies are continuing to enjoy the warm weather. We are still down on natives but they do seem to be slowly emerging. The commas are looking particularly fine.

Like many people we have had fewer of the colourful 'garden' butterflies this year but we have been pleased to see at least some of every regular species, except the Holly Blue. Here is a splendid Peacock resting in the grass.

I just read a post from someone complaining that they thought a rewilded field looked messy. I thought it looked beautiful, but that isn't the point. The value of things is NOT whether or not they seem pretty to us.
