Working with teacher leaders on more effective planning by doing the task first. Liz makes the perfect analogy. “I read the book before teaching it to think about what I want to ask and what I want to highlight. It only makes sense to do the math task first for the same reason.”

Quote from John SanGiovanni "This notion of direct instruction... actually undercuts struggle...We try to get them to replicate our thinking through an I Do-We Do-You Do model, and then we're dissatisfied when they can't think for themselves b/c they never had that opportunity."

Want to build number sense? Use more linear models! Standards and typical textbooks and teaching methods are missing a huge opportunity by emphasizing area models too soon – pies and pizzas for fractions, and Base 10 flats for place value. What a mistake! Check this out!
