My new book, Primary Reading Simplified, is released this Monday (27th January). Briefly, I'd like to explain why it exists, who I think will find it useful and where you can find it. >>

Thank you so much to everyone who has shared a photo of their copy of Primary Reading Simplified. It genuinely means the world to me.

*New post!* Choral response & 'I Say You Say' are two techniques I use with high frequency during my explanations. Although they seem simple, there is a lot of thinking behind them. bunsenblue.wordpress.com/2025/02/08/cho…

If you do di poorly, it is still not that bad. If you do it well, it’s the best teaching possible. However, if you do inquiry “well”, you’ll surprise the heck out of me. The closest I’ve seen was “di lite.” More often, you see inquiry done poorly, which is a dumpster fire.

Recently met a school leader. I suggested consistent procedures & clear directions so expectations were not ambiguous. He said: “I’m just not sure it’s the job of adults to be telling young people what to do.” If that’s you, there’s a good chance you have the wrong job.

Every word of this post is beautiful & true. It is all too easy to lower our expectations of what children can do. We must guard against this by being open to challenge about whether we expect enough, not just with respect to curriculum, but also with behaviour & character.
