For those going to look for the lesser yellowlegs in Rhyl and not sure if they've seen it or not, this is a comparison showing how different it (right) looks from a redshank (left). Slimmer build, longer (and yellow) legs with more like a greenshank plumage than redshank imo.

adult Iceland Gull at O'Callaghan Strand, Limerick late a'noon on Tuesday. One of six noted (the others being four at Killybegs, County Donegal and one at Castletownbere, County Cork). A far cry from the 114 Iceland/Kumlien's Gulls seen on a week's Irish trip in February 2012.

Seeing lots of Goshawks in the Brecks over the past few days with around 75% 2CY birds like this female. In the garage this afternoon when heard a gull going bananas. Rushed in to get the bins and turned out to be a female Gos. Only 3rd I’ve seen from the garden in 20 yrs.

ROSS'S GULL at Ganavan Sands mid-day today! I am in disbelief! After failing to find a White Billed Diver that had been reported, we decided as a last resort to go to Ganavan. As I was scanning a small white-winged gull flew though the frame...

A really exceptional bird at Lowestoft Ness today and a very nice try for a Great Black-headed Gull given only a quick look, but sadly just a stained Herring Gull! (More pics at cleybirds.com.)

Joint earliest date for the Emperor Moth in my garden today (21st of March). A single male came to the lure at approximately 4.15pm after it had been out for nearly 5hrs. Temperature in the shade was only 10c. Better photo tomorrow as it was so lively! Fordham, East Cambs

Steller's Eiders at Båtsfjord and Vardø, Arctic Norway. This stunning, pint-sized seaduck is the rarest of the eider species with a declining global population of 130,000 - 150,000 individuals. That might sound a lot, but its high Arctic breeding range extends from western Russia

Congrats Trevor Girling for finding this stunning Ross’s Gull at Titchwell yesterday morning and breaking news live. A first for Norfolk for me and undoubtedly Bird of the Year so far! Thanks too, Matt Lonsdale, for relocating in a field inland shortly after it left the coast.

Continuing my “gorgeous summer visitors” theme, here’s an action shot I took of the local Sedgeford Hoopoe, feeding avidly on leatherjackets this morning.
