His name is #AhmadArbery. Say his name - out loud. To our children. To our grandchildren. To our neighbors. In our churches. To your social media followers. And out of respect for his mourning mother. 😢 We can’t ignore this. It’s wrong & devastating.

I do not say this lightly or hastily but with fear & trembling after much deliberation. I think we are experiencing a divine reckoning in America. I don’t think the reckoning is over our having simply sinned. I think it’s over the fact that we have used God & the Bible to do it.

Story I learned last night: I started Girl Scouts in first grade and was an active scout until I was 17 (12th grade)—did ALL the GS stuff and loved my scouting experience. I was a GS national delegate. My troop, 1001, was in Detroit and almost all black.

The current state of American Evangelicalism is what we get when the gospel is reduced to an entrance exam instead of a whole way of living, serving, loving & self-giving. The point of discipleship & Bible study is to grow in relationship with Christ and in resemblance to Christ.

Only when diverse perspectives are included, respected, and valued can we start to get a full picture of the world: who we serve, what they need, and how to successfully meet people where they are. Listen, learn, unlearn, know when to lead, and know when to let others lead.
