Happy 'Gotcha' Day, Smokey Bear! On May 9, 1950, a badly burned bear cub was found after the Capitan Gap Fire. New Mexico Fish and Wildlife rangers rescued the cub and the nation quickly adopted him as the living symbol of Smokey.
