The contrast between Mark Carney's speech - a very centrist speech economically, but with some very realistic views of the challenges we face and the dynamics of that - and Poilievre stopping to endorse sovcit anti-tax protestors is striking to me today. cpac.ca/public-record/…

The breathless adulation of the government for their recent funding announcement is kind of silly. They made the minimum commitment needed and not a $ more. Research still in dire state in Canada. Increased training stipends don’t help if there are no labs left in which to train.

A very interesting perspective and as I read it I had a few thoughts.

First, the idea that Universities were not intended to be included is an interesting one.

It shouldn't surprise us now to see poorly thought out plans emerging half baked. /1

The article we wrote on our research that debunks the Alberta UCP's claim that the federal government is unfairly distributing funding to 'liberal' disciplines has been reprinted by the Canadian Press and is being distributed nationally.

Combined with the clawback to CFI funding announced two weeks ago, the small increase in research funding over the next 2 years means that total tri-council plus CFI dollars, in real terms, will be 10% lower in 2025-26 than they were in 2017-18 *before* the Naylor report.

“In her forever war against Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government, Alberta will now vet all research grant funding coming from Ottawa in search of its supposed ideological bias.”

🧵DATA UPDATE: With the introduction of Bill 18 and the Alberta premier's comments on federal funding being unfairly distributed to liberal disciplines, Ping Lam Ip and I collected data on over 35,000 research projects funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council.

I am still shocked by this and can't get over the ideological gall of it all. So I haven't said much but permit me a couple of comments.

The major mechanism that federal taxes are returned to the provinces in terms of research funding is what we call tri-council funding. /1

Despite being corrected that grants are determined by academic panels and not Justin Trudeau, Smith not only doubles down on that…

She then says that with the powers of Bill 18 she will block renewals of grants if they don’t align with UCP views.
