Foundations in Data Science (FinDS) Advanced Program for high-schoolers is another new initiative of the EnCORE institute (encore.ucsd.edu) that I direct. I am excited to see what these kiddos cook up in the next 2.5 months.

Basically: There is science AND there is academia. Academia has become “enterprise-centered” and metrics-oriented. It has advantages. But it’s fiercely competitive. Science requires perseverance and time. It’s about discoveries. Entrepreneurship and $$$ is only a byproduct.

Can a department ask one to do departmental service during summer months when a faculty is fully paid by his/her own research grant money? Just trying to understand how things work at various US universities where faculties get paid for 9 months by universities.
