Azura's Ops Team says: "In 2019, we produced 8% of Nigeria's on-grid electricity; our availability rate was 97.4%; we suffered zero gas constraints; and our reliability rate was 99.7%". Azura's MD replies: "Stop looking in the rear-view mirror. It's 2020 and there's work to do."

In the Christmas Hols, the Azura-Edo CSR team ran a 3 day medical programme for 2,400 people in its host community. Said the Scrooges: “Bah Humbug! We’re an old-fashioned power business, not an NGO”. But they were no match for the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present & Yet to Come.

#GetRealAboutEnergyPoverty Note 1/3: In the 2 years it took to build the natural gas-fired 461 MW Azura-Edo IPP, 18,000 MW of diesel gensets were sold in Nigeria. So can we please stop pretending that Africa’s energy needs can be met without a massive increase in baseload power.

Azura-Edo IPP (@azuraedo) 's Twitter Profile Photo

#GetRealAboutEnergyPoverty Note 2/3: Had the dirty & inefficient diesel gensets been replaced with baseload power running on (relatively) clean natural gas, it would have lowered Nigeria’s CO2e emissions by more than 10 million tonnes per annum.

#GetRealAboutEnergyPoverty Note 3/3: Funding institutions that no longer wish to invest in baseload power in Africa need to be honest about the social consequences. Delays in investment in Africa’s on-grid sector will increase BOTH energy poverty AND carbon emissions.

As the UK Govt prepares for the 2020 UK-Africa Investment Summit, we thank the UK Govt for its support for the Azura-Edo IPP. CDC (the UK’s DFI) is one of the largest investors in our power plant. An exemplar of true Anglo-Nigerian partnership, impacting the lives of >12m people.

This week, Azura will be joining @tradegovuk in the call to #InvestInAfrica. But reciprocity is the basis for true partnership. African countries possess a wealth of entrepreneurship, innovation & resilience. This is why we also support efforts to #LearnFromAfrica.

At the Azura-Edo IPP, we're not sure if it makes sense to use the word "celebrate" to mark the fact that today is International Women's Day. Women comprise 25% of our workforce; so there is still plenty of room for improvement!

It's great to see Olu Akpata emerge as the new President-Elect of the Nigerian Bar Association. Under Olu's judicious guidance, Templars has acted as legal counsel to Azura for nearly ten years now. 24 Carat legal brain. And a lovely guy to boot.

Last Friday's Netflix episode of "Explained" (subject matter: "The End of Oil") had superb contributions by Damilola Ogunbiyi and Nimmo Bassey, both of whom stressed that for Nigeria and other SSA nations, the energy transition must also be a just & equitable transition.

#Nigeria, rich in natural resources but still #energy poor, cannot afford to transition at the expense of affordable and reliable energy for people, cities and industry. We need multiple pathways to net-zero, writes Prof. Yemi Osinbajo in Foreign Affairs #SDG7 fam.ag/2WDPIwo
