A find from the Aston University Archives. The Uni's predecessor institution, the Birmingham Municipal Tech. School (1895-1927), ran a course in Railway Telegraphy in 1896-97. It's the first known instance of Aston or its predecessor orgs running a course for railway professionals.

Chuffed to report that Aston University Archives now have an The National Archives Sector ARCHON number and appear on Discovery! If you know nothing about #archives, this post might not move you right away; but if you do, especially in the UK, you know this is a wonderful milestone! Bottoms up!

The newly opened Aston University Archives holds student record books for 1893-94, 1894-95 and 1897-98. They detail students' occupations, employers, where they lived and courses. 56 railway workers attended the BMTS in this period, and I have plotted where they lived.

Wonderful to see up the exhibition by History at Aston, curated by Brian Sudlow (Aston), and realised together with Aston University Archives! Email [email protected] for guided tours!
