👀 this thread to see how the American fee for service health care system is broken for both providers and patients. As patient advocates how can we better help our patients avoid financial toxicity as health care providers are managing the billing demands of their institutions.

Catching up on my podcast queue after a few weeks of vacay and excited to hear Lisa Fitzpatrick,MD on Lemonada Media’s The Cost of Care. Public health nerds! Listen to the most recent episode about how healthcare providers must own their role in improving health literacy.

In my challenge course for AU Honors, my research team and I investigated how architecture and design are used to influence how people do & do not use certain spaces. Proud this project is resurfacing especially with the ongoing closing of encampments across the city.

Thank you Dr. Karen Winkfield for bringing attention to how utilization management can increase patient distrust and hurt the patient-provider relationship Cancer Policy Institute #UMSummit2021

Dr. Puckrein of NMQF: advocacy organizations need common language to describe how patients are experiencing utilization management to encourage changes by payer organizations #UMSummit2021 Cancer Policy Institute

Krista Nelson of ACCC: there should be a PA for meeting with a social worker before starting a new medication with side effects that could be difficult to manage while houseless. Love it! #UMsummit2021 #SDOH

At the Cancer Policy Institute utilization management presentation on HDHPs, Myra Simon makes the point that the line between being a “healthy person” and a “sick person” is very thin. “Everyone who gets a cancer diagnosis didn’t know they had cancer the day before.”

Putting the responsibility on the patient for deciding the care they need (and the cost they’re willing to pay) obscures the real issue – which is the high cost of healthcare itself. CINDY COX #UMForum2022 #patientadvocacy

When offering an incentive for participation in health research focus group/surveys, what’s your go to? Amazon? Visa? Check? Thinking about how to increase participation and decrease age/income/tech related barriers to receiving incentives. Would love some advice! #qualresearch

Xiomara was in the NICU for five months. I was at her bedside every single day for 169 days. Her dad and I took turns spending the night in the NICU after having dinner at home with our then 2yo son. Paid $7 every visit. Free hospital parking is the hill I will die on.
