People say ‘oh you can’t be that autistic, you have a job, you can manage independently’. Tell me why trying to navigate an unfamiliar leisure centre changing room made me burst into tears half an hour later from the state of complete overwhelm it left me in.

My autism: My environment changing around me makes me anxious. Unexpected plan changes make me anxious. A disruption to my comfortable routine makes me anxious. And, yes, sometimes my anxiety does actually make me cry.

Them: You don't look autistic Me: My autism doesn't really look like anything. It's mainly just me being anxious about things. Can't eat safe food. Anxious. Someone too close to me. Anxious. Have to do small talk. Anxious. Them: You don't look anxious Me: I hide it REALLY well

The autistic urge to explain everything fully, so nobody has gaps in their knowledge and needs to ask questions. The neurotypical urge to explain things briefly - not fully - so others have to ask you questions about it and you can connect over long, reciprocal conversations.

My autistic brain either takes something wholly at face value or subjects it to the highest level of scrutiny and analysis. In a given situation, a person will either get everything past me or nothing at all. I’m either very easy or very hard to dupe.

the year after you get an Autism diagnosis as an adult is a trip because you just rethink absolutely every situation you were ever in and then you’re like ‘oh’

Just overheard my eight-year-old son tell the little boy who lives across the street, “You have to go now. I’ve hit my limit for being around other people today.”

Autistic people may appear ‘patronising’ but actually be genuinely and kindly trying to help you. Our brains intuit and process information differently than most, so we often can’t tell the difference between: helpful wisdom you might not know; and general knowledge/common sense.
