It's hard to overstate the disaster this has been. Kids are going to have to delay their college decisions by months, and may well have to wait until summer break when their counselors might not be available to help them. Glad The 74 is reporting on this. the74million.org/article/bungle…

I have really enjoyed Wes Kao 🏛’s newsletter about leadership, and have shared with many folks on our team. I would love recommendations for other newsletters, books, articles, TED, talks, etc. Any suggestions?

This from Frederick M. Hess hit home. I can't think of a greater differentiator between good schools and bad schools than how they view attendance. Good schools know it's within their locus of control and do everything they can to improve it. Others...🤷‍♂️

What a disaster the FAFSA is. Applications completely erased. Inaccurate financial aid packages. Parents on hold for hours. As others have said if this was happening under DeVos the left would be *howling* The fact that it's your (and my) team screwing up doesn't make it ok.

Sounds nice. We’ve had families wait on hold for hours and get cut off. Others have had their applications erased. But then again, they’re not the secretary of education, so…

In 2021, we held a graduation for our 2020 seniors who lost theirs to COVID. Even though it was a year later, it was deeply moving and so important to those students. The idea that educators would choose to cancel such a meaningful right of passage is disheartening.

I'm late to this excellent piece from Troy Closson, but it demonstrates, yet again, that lowering standards in the name of equity only harms those with fewer resources. Always. nytimes.com/2024/05/22/nyr…

Heartfelt words from MESA Charter HS valedictorian Maria about the inequity of legacy admissions and why the bill from Andrew Gounardes is so important. cbsnews.com/newyork/news/n…

Yet another example of how the class size law is a transfer of resources from poor schools to wealthy ones. Is class size a lever? Sure, in some cases. But it’s not the only one, and we’ve privileged lowering class size at the expense of everything else.

Whatever your feelings on Israel/Gaza, it's clear that for some it's just been a license for vandalism (and sometimes much worse). This bank branch is used almost entirely by families and small businesses (and it's unacceptable regardless).

It was great to have cagirl80.bsky.social and other MESA Charter HS board members at our new facility yesterday! This work would not be possible without the support of our incredible board!
