#OTD 1961 Queen Elizabeth II opened the Anglo-Canadian telephone cable (CANTAT 1) laid by Post Office cable ship between White Bay, Newfoundland, Canada and Oban, Scotland, the first section of a subsea telephone network linking the Commonwealth. It was in operation until 1982.
