This must be a first: the wife (Kichi) of the head of household (Tasuke) is listed as a male boarder under her maiden name, with their children all listed as boarders as well. Wonder why this family was enumerated this way...

We're in court today -- right now! -- via Zoom! A few weeks ago, RTR filed our first ever amicus curiae brief in a federal court case, meaning that we're not the Plaintiff/Petitioner, but we're supporting them. We're trying to stop the USCIS "Genealogy Program" fee increases!

I like FamilySearch ‘s Family Tree tool, but strongly dislike the fact that they are unwilling to render diacritics in Hawaiian place names properly, resulting in absurdities like Waikïkï instead of Waikīkī.

This is from our RTR board member DeissRoll, one of the few people ever named a 'Citizen Archivist' at U.S. National Archives, in recognition of "...exceptional service promoting public awareness of NARA records". He has some thoughts about our FOIA against NARA. He doesn't hold back.

Mundane records recycled to make diff. parts of books are revealing. This entry in a registry of widowers caught my eye: "Gabriel Nicolas, 110, married to Patrona Lopes, 65, no kids." I wonder if she thought: "the old coot is 45-years older than me; how much longer can he last?"

Spotted while indexing today: Ancilla, aged 67 in the 1846 census of Frederiksted, St. Croix. She was born in Africa and surely brought to the Caribbean as a slave, though by this census, she was a free woman.

Q: Why would someone go to a party celebrating a baby's birth but say that they first saw the baby at 1 year old? A: The Chinese age reckoning system, which regards babies to be 1 year old at birth. This seems to have confused the interviewer in this birth certificate file.

Spotted in FS Indexing: The priest attending the burial of William James Lewis at St. Peter's, Klerksdorp, Pretoria left a wealth of information usually absent from these registers. Hopefully he can be connected to his family in Southampton one day (if he hasn't already).

One highly annoying thing about FamilySearch : Them showing that images may be available on a partner site, but not disclosing which partner site it is.

Spotted a couple interesting names in Barbados while transcribing: On 6 Dec 1863, Keren-happuch, daughter of James Henry and Desdemona Sargeant, was baptized in the parish of St. John.
