Meripilus giganteus is a wood decaying fungus that is easy to spot because of its big fruiting bodies at this time of the year. It often causes crown thinning (see furthest tree in image compared to nearest) and can destabilise big trees. If you see it, call in an expert, fast!

The peak of national recognition for a tree is probably for it to appear on a banknote. That's what Singapore did for the 150 year old Tembusu tree(Cyrtophyllum fragrans) in the Botanic Gardens. Its distinctive lower branch is easy to recognise. Well done Singapore.
