A Tory strength was that it drew support and candidates from across British society. The defection of Dan Poulter is an important signifier that its base is narrowing to the over 70s and headbangers - professionals and swathes of the middle class increasingly keep their distance

Lord David Frost “negotiated” the most disadvantageous trade deal in our history. Now, tilting at windmills of his own imagination, he wants to double down on the philosophy and policies that have self-evidently failed us. He is, literally, preposterous. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/…

The concern about the wave of shoplifting underlines a key proposition neglected over the last 14 years. A healthy economy is founded on a healthy society. Too many of our young are in desperate social and material need in a society whose mores are cracking. This is the result.

We have lost one of the greats . Endlessly inquisitive and wonderful, restless progressive mind and outlook. One of the major intellectual influences on my life, and proud to have known him - and to count him a friend. Profound condolences to Judith and his family.
