Choosing to compete on experience over expedience, The Hague removed four lanes of motor traffic along Grote Marktstraat in 2009. No longer squeezed on a narrow footpath, each day hundreds of thousands now visit what is one of the most successful shopping streets in the Benelux.

Did you know this: when you use renewable electricity to make hydrogen, you can't use it for things that abate 2x to 9x more emissions, namely getting coal off the grid, powering heat pumps and charging EVs. Call me old-fashioned, but I think this should have policy implications.

The primary energy fallacy is the idea that all primary energy from fossil fuels must be replaced with an equivalent amount of clean energy. BUT: This is not necessary because conversion losses do not need to be replaced. More than 2/3 of all primary energy is lost as waste

“If women designed cities, they would be planned for proximity instead of motorised mobility. This supports a transition from car-centric cities to ones where traffic has evaporated, and people work with nature to create places that function at a speed conducive to living well.”

Self-driving cars could be a disaster for climate change and road safety -- even if they work perfectly. The Jevons paradox, a classic 19th century theory, explains why. Me in The Verge 🧵 theverge.com/2024/9/2/24232…
