I've gained a reputation among some for being a 'purist' (or an 'idealist') for championing natural regeneration of trees over planting. Is that justified? I honestly don't think so, and here's why.🧵

Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure, with assistance from Elon Musk. The goal seems to be to get activists to switch away from encrypted Signal to mostly-unencrypted Telegram. I want to talk about this a bit. 1/

We’ve always told web devs that browsers prioritize what to implement based on developer demand. There is one exception: SVG. SVG is used on >65% of websites. Yet, browsers have been *refusing* to work on SVG, ignoring pressure and pain points from web devs. #StateOfHTML

I designed a new street thing last year, and I’ve seen a few of them out in the wild now so I figured it was time tell you all about it! It’s a support for temporary road signs. It’s made from recycled plastic and replaces a steel A-frame and sandbag. 🧵1/

I'm not talking much about the general election tax debate. Because it's irrelevant. The few £bn being discussed is dwarfed by the actual tax UK tax increases over the last few years, and the further tax increases we'll almost certainly see in the future. Grumpy thread:

The wonder of the web is that there is no center of control. That is why I, alongside 36 others, have signed the below open letter to António Guterres & Follow @ODET_UN for the latest updates 🖊️ #OpenInternet open-internet-governance.org/letter

The web works because it is a collaboration. No one has full control. We wrote an open letter to the United Nations: the proposed Global Digital Compact threatens this collaborative evolution. Creating a central point of control? NOT GOOD. 1/ António Guterres Follow @ODET_UN for the latest updates #OpenInternet

Read what 36 of us from among the technical leadership of the W3C (@[email protected]), @IETF and more have to say about this threat. #openInternet 2/2 open-internet-governance.org/letter

A subtle England penalty shootout innovation (since 2021) is their deliberate, structured & functional use of social psychology. Here, Saka is picked up by John Stones after his penalty, to swiftly welcome him back in the team. What did England do and why did they do it? 1/7

From the standards world, to video player implementers, I have some questions: How do you sync subtitles and captions with media on the web? currentTime? TextTrackCue? Something else? What is your target accuracy? How reliably do you meet it? How do you test?
