Yesterday I saw this natural regeneration right next to trees planted in tubes Queen Elizabeth Country Park Maybe the trees are a different species but it makes me wonder why we plant trees when natural regeneration is often better.

NEW PAPER OUT: Great to see work I was part of while at the Queensland Wetland program published. Using an attribute-based waterhole classification scheme to solve management challenges! doi.org/10.1071/WR22027

A photo of the best boy ever and a boreal stream. Seeing flowing water has got me excited for field work in Krycklan on boreal streams and ditches this summer 🌲.

Honoured to be officially an adjunct researcher at Australian Rivers Institute. I look forward to continuing collaborating and working with brilliant minds at the institute.

Last week I attended a sphagnum moss identification workshop. I was blown away by species diversity; we walked about 50 meters and identified 20 species. The arid ecologist in me couldn't get over the amount of water peatlands could hold, like giant sponges.

Day one of #SEFS13 in Newcastle, UK! Catch my talk in the Ditching misconceptions symposium tomorrow afternoon from 4.15pm. I’ll be giving a conceptual talk about the role of Swedish forest ditches as novel ecosystems.

Awesome plenary by Australian Rivers Institute Director Prof David Hamilton @profhamatham - why broadening your perspective to the macro is so important when looking to restore ecosystems - might even help explain the micro. #SEFS13

Read my latest paper here. Key adaption approaches include integrated land & water management, protecting and promoting key biotic and abiotic processes within landscapes, and reconsidering current exotic species management strategies.

I am recruiting a PhD student (in Umeå but trips to Uppsala too) for a project: Identifying, understanding and managing aquatic biodiversity in intensively managed forests and under an increasingly extreme climate. Deadline: October 31! slu.se/en/about-slu/w… Please share!

It's #WorldWetlandsDay! No grand vistas of peatlands from me; let's give some love to our ditches instead. Often ignored, but they can be beautiful and (sometimes) biodiverse; lines of wilder land in managed landscapes, and they are there in Convention on Wetlands if you read closely.

I'm thrilled to see this paper out, which I co-led with Chelsea Clifford, and featuring input from loads of excellent co-authors. It's our interdisciplinary perspective on ditches; what they do, why they matter, and how we should look after them. nature.com/articles/s4324…

I was lucky enough to travel to the UK to join ditch researchers from around the world in brainstorming and developing this paper. Fanstatic to see it published!
