"Without knowing a lot about it" is such an intentionally vague description it could be anything from "started watching recently" to "just likes the porn" I think if you don't give a shit about engaging with the original art the Fandom is built around, you're not a fan actually.

People keep conflating mech/mecha(piloted robot) with mecha(genre of art featuring mechanical components) This is the core issue.
