The last time I picked up a paintbrush was in 2008. I picked one up again today. Undoubtedly rusty, but I’m happy those two hours didn’t produce a disaster. (I tried acrylic for the first time.)

YA authors frequently employ an expressive first-person voice for “immediacy”. However, in this article, Noah Weisz argues that overtly emotional first-person voices can sometimes actually prevent, rather than enable, emotional intensity. leafjournal.org/article/73915-…

Overthinking your writing can lead to stumbling or even stalling with getting the story finished. K.M. Weiland has good advice to help you avoid this issue. buff.ly/3LOJnpf

I got the chills reading George Monbiot's latest column on the draconian police powers of the new ‘Public Order Bill’. But to understand how we got here we need to take a step back and look at the way these laws have been called into being. It's a wild story🤯 🧵

If you’re lucky enough to get a $50k advance (I averaged $15K from a big publisher, $250 from a small publisher, if they even paid it), you only get half up front. You get the other half when it’s done, maybe 2 yrs later. So, you have to survive on $21k for 2 yrs. 😔

Fuck off. Kids who aren’t rich deserve to study art, literature, drama, history etc. We need them. The entertainment and media sector was worth £83 billion last year. It accounts for 3% of total jobs (the same percentage as financial services). Her argument is unserious.

"Poetry is the restoration of the whole through details. Think of it as making a sketch of a face only briefly seen. Just as one puts together a shattered skull or an earthenware pot, poetry is the creation of the pieces that go in the spots where the original pieces are missing”
