Prior knowledge is an essential key in any STEM course. Check out what my colleague, Dr. Kibler of UCF Civil, Enviro. and Construction Engineering, put together for a Fluid Mechanics course for Civ Engg. It is part of our 3 univ (University of Pittsburgh, UCF USF Research) NSF grant! priorknowledge.mathforcollege.com/fluid-mechanic… Engineering USF

When the trifecta of papers, grants, and PhD students is the only archaic metric for hiring, tenure, and promotion at research universities, this is bound to happen!

It is what and how much we are consuming, not the lack of exercise which is making us obese. pnas.org/doi/full/10.10… But this should not be looked as dissing exercise because physical activity is so critical for mental health, mobility, sharp brain, bone and muscle health, etc.

Peer instruction leaves the vulnerable behind. Can we go back to direct instruction, not the show me 75 slides in 75 minutes kind. I wish people would read what DI is about. insidehighered.com/news/student-s… Zach Groshell Daniel Willingham Carl Hendrick

Hey Hillsborough County , please do not fall for corporate welfare again. If you have to, go for special property tax on residences above 400K. Then you will see the resistance from the wealthy who want to push sales tax increase on the poor. fox13news.com/news/tampa-bay…

Men are being left behind. This has been an issue for a while. Why don’t we take preventive measures to let everyone have a chance to flourish.

As u make your Fall syllabus, please give more than 1 midterm in regular lecture class. A 40% weight midterm exam can make or break S's grade. No time to give 3 midterms. Just get rid of inclass exam review session and postexam solution session. Do them online. Beth McMurtrie

Cambridge Dic new words “Skibidi” “cool” or “bad” or be used with no real meaning as a joke. “tradwife,” refers to a married mother who cooks, cleans and posts on social media "delulu,” for delusional “believing things that are not real or true, usually because you choose to.”

I think they should bring a subscription model (rent-a-center) to every non-edible item like TVs, computers, phones, houses, cars, audio systems, game consoles, household appliances, etc, that surely will keep the whole family enslaved for generations. #subscriptionModel

What has happened to children’s attention span? The problem may not be that they can’t pay attention, but rather that they don’t want to. I review the data here: educationnext.org/pay-attention-…

Princeton joins many elite Univs requiring standardized tests for admission. forbes.com/sites/michaelt… Grades have become super inflated since COVID. So the correlation of college GPA has suffered. About .6 with tests, .4 with GPA and .7 combined.

Took rides in Waymo in SF. We felt completely safe in it as SF traffic is slow. It did get stuck once when another Waymo touched a caution flag on a big flat truck. It didn't know what to do—we were with the CS for 30 mins, figuring it out. They gave us a few free rides.
