Curious to hear Shabana Mahmood MP speak on reinstating the rule of law and criticising #LegalAid changes - the cuts that made the courts much less accessible to disadvantaged people. We need to rebuild our #justice system, and civil legal aid is a necessary part of it!

Today's #RentersReformBill debate shows just why we, and many other groups working with renters, no longer support it. MPs' many concerns left unaddressed. Gov't pushing yet more late amendments to favour landlords. Right now, the Bill's not worthy of its name!

Like it's going out of fashion: more landlords used s.21 'no fault' #eviction last year, on nearly *26,000 households*! So much for government's pledge to scrap s.21 five years ago. Last week they baked an indefinite delay to this into #RentersReformBill mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…

The five-year-old promise of the Renters (Reform) Bill is now broken. It was broken not today but when the gov't repeatedly watered down the Bill's renter protections. The Bill we've just lost was not the Bill we'd been promised anyway. I hope the next gov't shows more integrity!

The weakening of people's trust in the rule of law - indeed, of the rule of law itself - does not come out of nowhere. Policymakers have become too chill about creating a system allowing 'the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must'.

So happy to see these two brilliant women recognised with honours: Dame Karen Buck, a dedicated public servant and APPG on Access to Justice chair; and Sue Bent OBE, until recently chief exec of Central England Law Centre and all-round inspirational leader. So richly deserved - congratulations to both!

Oh hello! The things you find on your morning walk, in this case obscuring bits of Deptford. "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it."

"The consequences [of #LegalAid cuts] have been disastrous." Willy Bach is the Chair of Leicester Community Advice and Law Centre (LCALC), our new Law Centre in Leicester. Thanks, Lord Bach, and Baroness Chakrabarti, for fighting our corner in yesterday's #KingsSpeech debate on justice. (1/6) 🧵

Law Centres are fighting on two fronts: to meet people's needs and to keep operating despite adverse funding and operating conditions. As Zelensky said in 2022, the fight is here: I need ammunition, not a ride.
