I was talking to students that hated math and asked them why they hated it. I realized that they didn't really hate math but rather that they hated being frustrated. They WANTED to understand and like math.

Get automatic feedback from your students after each class. It could sting a bit at times, but at least it helps us reflect on our day and how the lesson was perceived.

Is there a place for speed in math? Not when we are working on fluency because fluency doesn't depend on speed. Does it matter for automaticity? Yes. Does is encourage kids to find better strategies? Yes. Does it make math more fun for SOME? Yes. Maze can be done quickly. How?!
