Rare sighting of the galls of the gall midge on the wild carot which is similar to the central and raised black flower of the wild carot umbels. Gall midges avoid oviposition on galled umbels and are sometimes deterred by the gall-mimicking black central flower.

Despite claims to the contrary, the total demise of the #ecology blogosphere has not yet occurred. It seems timely, therefore, to revisit the whole notion of ecological #blogging what it's for & why we do it - more here: jeffollerton.co.uk/2024/08/29/don… Stephen Heard Dr Manu Saunders

Excited to share this hot-off-the-press work in New Phytologist! With Alejandro Zuluaga & Juan Moreira-Hernández, PhD., we used experiments to address the adaptive significance of a trait common among bat-pollinated flowers... Full article here: nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/XCYVRIKX… (1/5)

I have observed this bee-fly, I think Systoechus sp., flying around the nests of Colletes hederae (Ivy bee). Can anyone identify the species or provide some information about its biology?

#Boraginaceae have some interesting floral biology. In some, the flower color change (blue/pink) signals to pollinators that flowers have already been visited. The flowers of Huynhia pulchra lose (or gain? Can anyone confirm?) spots with age. #Boraginales

Reminds me of a conversation with my then head of department, early in my career: Me: "The advantage of my research is that it's relatively cheap." Him: "Then we'll have to think of ways of making it more expensive". robinheinen.com/2024/10/06/the… #AcademicChatter #SciencevManagement

Regarding the recent application by National Farmers' Union to allow 'emergency' use of neonics on sugar beet, this image explains the problem: most of the pesticide goes into soils, leaches into waterways, & is taken up by wildflowers & hedgerows. Only 5% in crop. nature.com/articles/natur…

A very inspiring #SCAPE2024 keynote lecture by Prof. Jeff Ollerton - @[email protected] ! Plant-pollinator interactions are foundational to the Sustainable Development Goals, not only a from a food production perspective, but also in relation to societal equity, carbon sequestration, and so much more.
