Blog on children writing haiku - counting syllables misses the point and often spoils the writing. Go for the memorable image: childrenspoetrysummit.com/2024/10/03/pie…

Something that I find really interesting about early years is the Reggio idea of the environment as a 'third teacher'. We see letters in children's mark making before they are ever formally taught to write them. Children learn from what they see and experience. #EYFS

A question I am regularly asked about reading lessons is this: How can we write learning objectives for lessons without a clear focus on a specific 'comprehension skill'? My answer? Don't bother. >>

- Just one dragonfly can consume over one hundred mosquitos in a day - Dragonflies can fly backwards - They have nearly 360-degree vision - Their wings inhibit bacterial growth due to their natural structures - They're actually beautiful This is not stained glass, it's a wing.

Where the heck does this come from?!? Those descriptions of tiers are ok, but the examples are kinda bananas! And It’s NOT ‘tiered vocabulary’! It’s think about words that are broadly useful to kids but likely unfamiliar. Then check in with tiers as a guide.

A clutch of bejewelled dragon eggs turned up in Y3 this week! Fortunately, ‘The Book of Dragons’ gave us some inspiration. The children have been thinking about what could be lurking inside each one and have written some poems. Pie Corbett Talk for Writing

Perfect timing! Pie Corbett and I are looking for a number of schools to work collaboratively on this whole school (multi-school) writing project. A great way to share the cost and connect with other schools along a proven school improvement journey. Interested? See the post

One in every two summer born disadvantaged boys had a low level of KS1 literacy last year. Among non-disadvantaged pupils, summer born boys were more than twice as likely as autumn born girls to have a low level of literacy. ffteducationdatalab.org.uk/2024/12/low-or…
