Olgierd Budrewicz was 16 when WW2 began. He completed his education in the underground and, in 1944, fought in the #WarsawUprising, contributing to the insurgent press. After the war, he became a journalist, often writing about his beloved Warsaw. #OTD in 2011, he passed away.

Władysław Drelicharz fought against the German invasion of Poland in 1939. He later joined the Polish Carpathian Rifle Brigade and fought at Tobruk. He went on to serve with the Polish II Corps at Monte Cassino and Ancona before being killed #OTD in 1944 near Faenza, Italy.

Emanuel Ringelblum, born #OTD in 1900, was a Polish-Jewish historian who documented the crimes committed by the Germans against Poland’s Jews. He was the principal founder of the Oyneg Shabbos underground archive, which preserved a collection of invaluable documents during WW2.

Isaac Bashevis Singer, born #OTD in 1902. He was a Polish Jew who cherished Warsaw throughout his life, and its rich cultural scene inspired many of his stories, often portraying the clash between tradition and modernity. In 1978, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Jerzy Bitschan was not yet 14 when the defense of Lwów began. He slipped away from home and volunteered to join the Polish defenders and fight alongside them. During the fighting in the Łyczaków district, he was wounded and died tragically #OTD in 1918.

Tadeusz Danilewicz was a decorated Polish soldier and a veteran of WW1, the Polish-Bolshevik War, and WW2. He served in the National Armed Forces and took part in the #WarsawUprising in 1944. After the war, he was forced to flee communist Poland. He died abroad #OTD in 1972.

Felicja Sulimirska was one of the young Polish residents of Lwów, the so-called Lwów Eaglets, who volunteered to fight for the city to remain part of the newly reborn Polish state. #OTD in 1918, she died in combat.

Jan Stanisław Matuszek, born #OTD in 1892, was a WW1 veteran who served in the Polish-Bolshevik War. During WW2, he fought against the German-Soviet invasion of Poland and was captured by the Soviets. In 1940, he was murdered in the #KatynMassacre by the NKVD.

Janusz Zeyland, born #OTD in 1897, fought in the Greater Poland Uprising and the Polish–Bolshevik War. He pioneered the BCG vaccination and conducted key research on tuberculosis. He was killed by the Germans in 1944 during the Wola massacre at the Wolski Hospital.
