My pleasure to award Javi the 2024 International Tax and Public Finance award for the best paper presented by a PhD student at the IIPF - International Institute of Public Finance. His work on payments under the table shows that formally employed workers do informal work for their boss & this happens for high-income workers too.
Sébastien Laffitte (CYU & EU Tax Observatory) won one of the IIPF - International Institute of Public Finance Young Economist Awards at the #iipf2024 in Prague. He put together an amazing database on the history of tax havens to analyze the determinants and consequences of countries becoming tax havens.
Valeria Zurla (Valeria Zurla) won another of the IIPF - International Institute of Public Finance Young Economist Awards at the #iipf2024 in Prague. She studies a fascinating Italian setting were mothers could choose between different parental leave policies. The paper has the potential to inform policymakers about
Excited and humbled for being awarded the IIPF - International Institute of Public Finance Young Economist Award, joint with Jacopo Bassetto (and co-winner Valeria Zurla), after three full days of high-quality presentations and inspiring keynotes at #iipf2024 in beautiful Prague. Too bad I had to miss the final dinner!
The last of the IIPF - International Institute of Public Finance Young Economist Awards at the #iipf2024 in Prague went to Giuseppe Ippedico (UoNEconomics) and Jacopo Bassetto (University of Bologna). Their paper shows the effect of an Italian tax scheme incentivizing Italians living abroad to return to Italy.
The most important award of IIPF - International Institute of Public Finance is the Peggy and Richard Musgrave prize. At #iipf2024, David Leite won this award, for amazing work showing that tax evasion by using firms as consumption vehicles is a substantial issue - with a revenue loss of about 1% of GDP. 1/2

My trip to Europe was enriching! I attended the IIPF - International Institute of Public Finance congress and board meeting in Prague, engaging with experts on integrating evidence into policy.
