Update No. 1 (I’m a little behind on a few updates) This happened - February 2024. Justine is a wonderful person, being husband and wife is really awesome and a privilege.

Update No. 2 (Context first) After finishing studying in the late 90s I was fortunate enough to get a full-time job! - writing music! - in NZ! - in my home town of Christchurch!

Thanks Tom Rainey for picking me for this - Tom and I gained a huge amount of enjoyment and creative satisfaction for two-and-a-half years writing music and working with a bunch of hugely creative and fun characters (humans I mean) on Whitebait Media’s first venture "Bumble".

Since then I’ve been freelancing in the music-for-media/theatre/performance world and teaching part-time at various Christchurch tertiary institutions. There are huge benefits of the freelance world of course, it’s fantastic; and at the same time,

I sometimes missed the time at Bumble Productions. Yes a full-time gig has the obvious security and lack-of-running-around elements, but also, one seems to never be quite wholly immersed in a place when one runs in, teaches, runs out to the next place… (which is often great!).

So I was always able to say (with a proud grin on my face) that I hadn’t had a full-time job since 2001. Then in January last year my friend and UC colleague Reuben de Lautour (thanks Reuben!) said ‘why haven’t you applied for the job?’).

So I checked and there was a full-time ‘Lecturer In Screen Sound’ position going at UC (where I’d been part-time since 2003), it was pretty much exactly a combo of what I’d been doing in freelance and teaching roles, and applications closed in 3 days.

I applied for this role and was very very pleased to get it, things have been a bit busy since then and here we are. Note (to all the people I’ve been doing awesome projects with) that I’m still doing awesome projects as well, just calling it research

(and having to turn down more, and happily hand some on to others in the composition/arranging/sound design community)

Update No. 3 Following on from Update No. 2, come work with me! Audio people (internationally) - come and help represent audio at The University Of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. There are a lot of new things happening at the Digital Screen Campus: exciting courses,
