So you end up with a system where colleges raise prices to obscene levels, lenders hand out $ to anyone who seeks it (eg, 17 year olds) & young folks end up with huge loans with compounding interest that they’ll never escape. All for doing the “right” thing, getting an education.

Back to that 1998 bill. Why would Congress make this policy & single out student debt? And 20+ years later, did they regret & want to change it? We spoke to key folks involved in drafting the bill — from both parties. And only one thing was clear: No one knew whose idea it was.
