A key member of Dawn’s newsroom since 1992, Rafique Jalal began his journalistic career from the daily Sindh Guardian in Hyderabad. He moved to Karachi in mid-1990s, where he joined Dawn as subeditor, then shift incharge & eventually designated as deputy news editor in 2022.

Muharram has commenced and with it the daily ritual of communal cooking. In my latest essay for my website, I write about the preparation of a meal in an Iranian village.

The video shows older women preparing raw poultry and the younger ones patiently browning chicken drumsticks.
