Rafique Jalal & I chatted on literature & music when we reached newsroom early. I marvelled at his loyalty to Dawn's news editors. His diligence as shift in-charge was amazing. It's people like Rafique Jalal, the unsung heroes, who truly run legacy media. RIP, sir. You did well.

Muharram has commenced and with it the daily ritual of communal cooking. In my latest essay for my website, I write about the preparation of a meal in an Iranian village.

What struck me most was the unobtrusive filming and the intergenerational cooperation as children play around, subconsciously absorbing the sacred and communal preparation of a meal. Find out what else was indicated. maleehahamidsiddiqui.wordpress.com/2025/06/30/muh…

In the end, for me, #TooMuch wasn't the great US/UK love affair I was hoping for. However ep 5 was a powerful insight into the insidious nature of emotional neglect. Lena managed to demonstrate how casual cruelty becomes a shadow you can't shed.

I had never heard of Jaffa cakes until I watched #TooMuch on Netflix. The writer cleverly inserts a well-known British snack to show food disparities between two countries. My take on Too Much, Jaffa cakes & British culture: maleehahamidsiddiqui.wordpress.com/2025…

If you still watch Netflix, then I recommend #TooMuch. It follows New Yorker Jessica Salmon who has sworn off romance only to find unexpected love with Felix Remen, a musician she meets at a London pub. If you are cool with positive queer characters, my recco stands.
