Talking flies means talking veins. Modern interpretation means saying goodbye to one of the anal veins. Science never stops & continuous adjustments are made as our knowledge/understanding increases Fly School Dipterists Society Dipterists Forum #FlySchool24

Tipulidae ecology is very interesting but sadly many are predated upon by vertebrates before they have a chance to shine - a fact that fisherfolk’s have taken advantage off… Fly School Dipterists Forum #FlySchool24

Toad Blowfly (Lucilia bufonivora)...adults were common at the Yorkshire Arboretum on an YNU meeting back in June and today results of that were seen. The toad is still alive, but larvae are feeding away within the nostrils. Dipterists Forum

Our 1st Locust Blowfly - Stomorhina lunata (a female) of 2024 seen on the 14th in our Northants garden. Our earliest sighting and seen for the 3rd year running here so likely to breeding. Still only a handful of sightings in the County.

Scathophaga furcata from Radnorshire Dipterists Forum spring field trip; makes a change from S. stercoraria although there were lots of those too. Still room for more sub-contracted ID work if anyone is overwhelmed with flies to determine! dipteraid.co.uk #dungflies

Mid-August and the fungi are appearing in the woods, so it must be Suillia Season! 🥳 Time to get out there and record those spiny-winged flies #heleomyzidae. One of many Suillia variegata today at North Cliffe Woods Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve. YNU Dipterists Forum
