Very excited about my new pub on Social Media+Society : How are perceived “unpatriotic” Chinese female intellectuals shamed on social media? I investigate how social exclusion and national identity are constructed discursively in 4 high-profile digital vigilantism cases in China.

While the AI doomers were reading sci-fi novels, we Data School were developing impact assessments & audit processes, identifying empirically verified harms & real risks, and ways to mitigate them. We do not write open letters but work on actual solutions to real problems.

So glad to see this finally published. Isabelle Fest from Police Lab Utrecht University -who conducts ethnographic fieldwork within Dutch National Police- maps how data professionals in the police force grapple w. ethics, professional integrity & conduct. OA: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

Dennis Nguyen demonstrated where data bias becomes a problem, such as when voice recognition doesn’t recognise accents or when people of colour are over represented in crime statistics. He addressed why this happens and what it means for research. #digimethods2023
