I was totally caught off guard with this amazing surprise anniversary celebration of ten years (!!!) Data School here at Utrecht University - looking back at the guerrilla years w. Paul Boeschoten , the start up years w. @kfvanes & Iris Muis and forward to our establishment era 😉
In 'Situating the Marketization of Data' Fernando van der Vlist | @fvandervlist.bsky.social and I focus on the infrastructural layer and intermediaries of the global data market. We're excited to announce our new book series "Technology, Power, and Society" with Brill Social Sciences ➡️ Facebook! For our inaugural volume, Meg Jing Zeng, Bruce Mutsvairo and I are looking for contributions that take a critical look at digital media from a global angle -check the CfP:
📎the cfp for the ECREADMM Transnational families and media practices: methods, ethics and critical approaches conference happening Erasmus University 7-8 december '23 is now out - it looks great >> with keynotes by Amanda Alencar & Myria Georgiou 🌟ecrea.eu/event-5179455
Very excited about my new pub on Social Media+Society : How are perceived “unpatriotic” Chinese female intellectuals shamed on social media? I investigate how social exclusion and national identity are constructed discursively in 4 high-profile digital vigilantism cases in China.
In this new article published on Internet Policy Review (policy repay) I explore with a blend of computational and qualitative methods how news media cover risks of big data and AI and how that links to critical data literacy: policyreview.info/articles/analy… #criticaldatastudies
My book 📖 Digital migration is now out it seems! Haven’t received my author copy yet but more importantly it exists in the hands of readers like the great Dr Sara Marino - pls everyone let me know what you think - this was a passion project bringing different fields together 🙏
Out now! Digital Migration with Sage Media & Comm. In contemporary discussions on migration, digital technology is often seen as a 'smart' disruptive tool. Bringing efficiencies to management, and safety to migrants. But the reality is always more complex. 1/11
While the AI doomers were reading sci-fi novels, we Data School were developing impact assessments & audit processes, identifying empirically verified harms & real risks, and ways to mitigate them. We do not write open letters but work on actual solutions to real problems.
So glad to see this finally published. Isabelle Fest from Police Lab Utrecht University -who conducts ethnographic fieldwork within Dutch National Police- maps how data professionals in the police force grapple w. ethics, professional integrity & conduct. OA: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…
I'm happy to let you all know that today Sharon Ponzani and I submitted the manuscript for our volume 'Doing digital migration studies. Theories and practices of the everyday' to Amsterdam Univ Press featuring a selection of chapters first presented at the Migrant belongings conference
Today I had the pleasure to talk at #IAMCR2023 about our research in African news discourses on Chinese tech using mixed methods (computational/quant. & qual.) co-authored with Bruce Mutsvairo & Bei Wang! Thanks for the lively discussion & thoughtful questions!
