Today, we’re one step closer to restoring dignity to incarcerated women in Pennsylvania. Our team is working to provide access to feminine hygiene products & trauma-informed services as well as restrict the inhumane practice of shackling for pregnant & postpartum women.

Empathy Network Leader, Tonie Willis is in large part to thank for this. She has dedicated her life to helping women impacted by the justice system after experiencing firsthand the hurdles women face after leaving prison.

The opioid crisis has devastated communities across the country. Humane treatment for people suffering from addiction is not a partisan issue.

It’s time to unite lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to prioritize legislation that promotes prevention, harm reduction, and evidence-based treatment for those struggling with addiction.

Affirmative action bans have historically widened gaps in representation, especially at elite universities: 🔻17.3% pre-ban (late 1990s) 🔺24.4% post-ban (2015) The percentage of Black & Brown students graduating high school is much higher than those admitted to elite colleges.

Some things don't change, but they need to. Former President Barack Obama's words from his 2014 NAACP Conference speech still ring far too true almost 10 years later. Families, and communities, deserve to see an end to mass incarceration. They're why we work so hard every day.

Congratulations to Dream Justice Cohort alumni Kenneth Nixon on being awarded the DETROIT BRANCH NAACP Great Expectation Award! Kenneth graduated from the program in early 2022 after serving 16 years behind bars in Michigan for a crime he didn’t commit.

After a judge overturned his conviction in April 2021, Kenneth left prison as a free man. Shortly after release, he founded the Organization of Exonerees, a non-profit dedicated to helping others in similar situations.

He credits the cohort with giving him “the tools, expertise and knowledge needed to stand up and advocate for true equality, true freedom. ( Dream Justice Cohort) helped me develop the skills necessary to be a voice for justice impacted people in this country."
