The Nationally Scarce heathland dweller Crambus hamella was much appreciated in the Upton garden trap this morning (amongst a paltry 86/30 following a fortnight's wasp-fuelled hiatus), alongside several examples of the ever-lovely Agriphila geniculea #TeamMoth Dorset Moths
A month's Hornet-induced hiatus came to an end at the Cold Harbour office this morning, with a fab 290/79 in the trap, includ'g the site's 1st (& my 2nd) Rosy Underwing, plus Palpita vitrealis, Portland Ribbon Wave, & Archer's Dart amongst others (oh, & 50 Hornets..) Dorset Moths
Sunday night prod'd a respectable 183/65 in the Upton garden trap, incl'g Portland Ribbon Wave, 3 Palpita vitrealis, 9 Silver Y, & 8 Angle Shades on the (probable) migrant front, plus a brace of Old Lady, another Calybites phasianipennella, & Pinion-streaked Snout Dorset Moths
Another ID guide emerges ๐ covering 4 UK horsefly species in Atylotus, a genus of gorgeous grey, green & golden flies. Thanks as ever for ๐ธ Steven Falk, Malcolm Storey, Tanyptera Project, Paul Brewster, Peter Brash & Rob Wolton. Download from dipterists.org.uk/soldierflies-aโฆ #soldierflies
The Wryneck Exclusion Zone remains in place for yet another yr @ St Aldhelm's Head, with 4 Whinchat, 2 Wheatear, 7 flava Wag', 3 Tripit, Lssr W'throat, Se.Warbler, Hobby, 3 Swift, & 275 Linnet, plus a smattering of Phylloscs, the main migrant interest this morning Dorset Bird Club
An unexpected (& beautifully patterned) Bloxworth Snout(less) hanging out in the Durlston CP seawatching hut this morning - only the 2nd I've seen in Dorset #TeamMoth Dorset Moths
A 2hr seawatch at Durlston this morning, undertaken more for want of something to do than with any real hope of something tasty, saw a Balearic Shear' & 4 C.Scoter west, plus 10 distant Common Dolphins #WhoNeedsTheEastCoastAnyway #WesterliesAreTheNewEasterlies Dorset Bird Club
A minor MigFest amongst 86/37 in the Upton garden trap this morning, with Pearly Underwing the highlight, alongside 2 Silver Y, 2 Angle Shades, 3 Diamondback, & single RD Pearl & Rush Veneer. A tatty Red Underwing was also nice to see #TeamMoth Dorset Moths Migrant Lepidoptera
Some nice Dipteran bycatch in the Upton garden moth trap this morning - Baccha elongata and Anomoia purmunda #diptera Team Diptera ๐ชฐ๐๐ป
Autumn's definitely arrived... 77/29 in the Cold Harbour office trap today included a smart Lyonetia prunifoliella, plus the first Heath, Hedge, & Neglected Rustics of the season, with Single Silver Y, Euro' Corn-borer, & Diamondback the only (potential) migrants Dorset Moths
A varied morning @ St Aldhelm's Head, with single Spot' Fly', Whinchat, Tripit, & Wi.Warbler, 2 Wheatear, 28 flava Wag', 4 G.Wag', 30 Chiffchaff, & 1,250 Swallow through alongside smaller numbers of martins Dorset Bird Club
An uninspiring 97/25 in the Upton garden trap this morning included my 1st Lunar Underwing of the yr, a Pale Mottled Willow, a brace of Cypress Pug, & several L-album Wainscot, with interesting bycatch in the form of a Tawny Cockroach nymph #WheresMyClifden #TeamMoth Dorset Moths
Red-backed Shrike still showing very well at Lytchett Bay this morning. Thanks to ian ballam for organising access. Note bird is on a private part of the site & access will only be possible until noon today Dorset Bird Club Birds of Poole Harbour
An unsurprising 21/14 in the Cold Harbour office trap this morning, after a chilly and largely clear night, did however include my first Anomalous of the year, alongside a late Birch Mocha, the ever-lovely Angle Shades, & several Silver Y #TeamMoth #StillNoBigBlue Dorset Moths
