It’s easy to be the Asst Coach, the backup QB, the “next-in-line”, and say what you would do if you were in the top spot. It’s difficult to be the person in charge. Be careful what you say when you are on your way up, as you may think differently if you get that chance.

What is Grit? Here’s my formula.

The value of competing in sport is not in winning, losing, earning a scholarship or getting to play in college or professionally. The value of sport is in the development of discipline, grit, facing adversity, habits and a growth mindset. Use the game; don’t let the game use you!

Parents: Teach kids that their relationship with their coach is THEIR relationship. They have to take the initiative to work out issues instead of depending on you to do it. Don’t intervene on their behalf unless it’s absolutely necessary. That kind of independence is invaluable!

You want to instantly be tougher? Learn to keep your mouth closed while being coached. Be able to take correction without needing to talk back, give excuses or change your body language. You must work at it. This is a mental toughness skill & it takes deliberate daily practice!
