Back to RNOH to add a final touch to Level 3. At one end of the ward you pass a forest of ivy covered trees, with @JackieMorrisArt goldfinches and swallows overhead, and a carpet of bluebells beneath. At the other end of the ward, the landscape opens up to meadows and moorlands.

Our wish for @PICU_BCH was to create a calm and reflective space, a room that offers respite from the stress of the intensive care unit, a place that feels safe enough for families to be vulnerable or comforted for a while themselves, before returning to their child’s bedside 🏩

As 2019 draws to a close, am thinking back over a very special commission for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s PICU. It's publication day for The Lost Spells & also #nationalpoetryday2020. Huge thanks to all who've helped bring our book into being. We want it to be a field-guide to nearby nature, so there's a glossary identifying all the book's species (also turned into a poster for schools).

Then our book became a building. 3 hospitals in fact, all of them hospitals, starting with the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, which used the book's paintings & poems, re-designed by Alison O'Toole, to re-imagine what a hospital's corridors & waiting rooms might look like.
