How lovely. One of the joys of having grandchildren is discovering all over again what wondrous worlds are contained between the covers of a picture book.

I’m with my 93-year-old mother in a hospital ward on the Wirral, and she has just been asked for her pronouns. The poor nurse filling in the form obviously found it very embarrassing, and my ma was utterly baffled, once she had finally heard the question. Wtf. Insanity.

The World Service just had a devastating feature on millions of under five year olds who are malnourished in Afghanistan. Why is there no outcry?
