Continuing to repeat a claim doesn’t make it the truth.

The truth is that whole language (the basis of Reading Recovery) produces instructional casualties.

How do I know? Those are the children we teach at secondary school.

Just attended my last Direct Instruction training of the school year with Nat'l Institute DI. It's a myth that scripted curriculum is just plug and play. It takes skill to attend to student responses and deliver fast paced instruction. What matters is student success, not the script.

The phonics check ”is quick, objective, and based on a model of reading (the Simple View) which stands up to scientific scrutiny, unlike the widely-used but slow and subjective Running Record...'' 1/2

But it's okay to use public money to forgive people's student loans even if I don't like it?

Just trying to keep up here. It's all so confusing.

Really? An accurate education? Have you seen the way they've tried to teach children how to read over the past few decades?

Nothing wrong with a teacher pay raise. But when are they going to raise reading proficiency in the state of North Carolina?

See how any school in NC performs in getting kids reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade.

Despite the widespread acceptance of 3rd grade reading proficiency as a pivotal benchmark, 1/3 to 1/2 of children, even in above-average schools, fail to reach that standard.

See how your state's schools perform.

Reading is the cornerstone of success, but NC public education is failing to provide students with a sound, basic education.

According to NC Public Schools data for 2022-2023, statewide ONLY 34.7% of black students, 37.1% of Hispanic students, 36.3% of economically disadvantaged

Important to note that they're working with students of the same parents as before.

This is an inconvenient fact for those who want to lay the entire illiteracy crisis at the feet of students' home life.

Schools can make a difference; they've just been historically bad at it.

You are more likely to find educators in your school attributing student learning and behavior problems to student disabilities and SES than ineffective instructional methods.

A school’s ineffectiveness may be attributable to a variety of causes but the most common one is that they neglect to use research-based teaching practices.

Only 10-15% of K-12 students have a certified educational disability impeding their educational progress yet 60-70% of students at most schools fail to read at a proficient level.

I'm genuinely curious, when people call for 'fully funding' public schools, what's the dollar amount?

How is the public supposed to know when they've 'fully funded' public schools?

It seems to me like a dangling carrot we'll never reach.
