The view from the nose of the helicopter as it lands at the field camp at Cape Crozier Antarctica where I stayed for a few days filming the science crew studying the emperor penguins. They nest on the flat sea ice in the gaps on the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf.

Another Scott Base winter photo fresh from the archives. Taken in late March with new sea ice in front of the base, and a fresh dusting of snow covering everything. The Hangar building in the foreground was removed recently as part of the Scott Base rebuild project. #Antarctica

At the bottom of Lake Fryxell in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, microbial life is changing as the climate warms. Armed with his kitchen spatula, Prof Ian Hawes was there to see it first hand. More here: antarcticscienceplatform.org.nz/updates/under-… πŸ“· Anthony Powell πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ

20 years ago today in a small chapel during the winter isolation in Antarctica. It seems like just the other day. Time flies when you're having fun. Love you Mrs P.

They are pretty rare, but occasionally you will spot an adelie penguin with different coloration. This is one I spotted this summer when I was filming at Cape Bird with AntarcticaNewZealand. In the background the chicks are panting from the heat. #Antarctica #Penguins

It's hard to wrap your brain around just how big some of the glaciers in #Antarctica are. Flying over the Byrd Glacier, this was half way across after 6 minutes flying at 100knots. The top of the glacier on the Polar Plateau in the distance is about 100Km away. AntarcticaNewZealand

A busy day for me today, out in the hagglunds on the sea ice of McMurdo Sound, #Antarctica. I was installing some research cameras to monitor the local seals. The last time I was in this location back in February last summer I was in a zodiac, and this whole area was open water.

I just watched the incredible documentary "Antarctica: A Year on Ice" by Anthony Powell πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ . And then I realized: Here are 12 ways maintaining a legacy software system is like wintering at an Antarctic base:

Lake Vanda and the Wright Valley. Dry Valleys, #Antarctica. The Dry Valleys are often called the place on Earth that is most like Mars. They remain mostly snow-free due to the local microclimate.
