Raising the alarm: Rannoch Brindled Beauty moths are out in Perthshire! This one looks fresh from the pupa and may be drying his new wings, we don't usually get to see them like this so it was a nice treat.

If you enjoyed the stunning views of Edinburgh from Arthur’s Seat on Netflix UK & Ireland's One Day, you might like to know that it’s a great place to see a rare butterfly called the Grayling 🦋⛰️

Greenock, Scotland. Remember none of this is a major problem according to our politicians. We’ll all pretend it’s fine despite the fact it’s just the beginning - and governments plan to make it worse for another 30 years

Spooky season is upon us! Beautiful Canary-shouldered thorn moth in the trap, with Tawny Owl calling from the field next door and stags roaring on the hills.

Proud to have been part of the team that tracked these Northern Brown Argus down, but all credit due to an extremely dedicated volunteer who scoured the hillside at Blairlogie for two years looking for their eggs after finding them in her garden Butterfly Conservation 🦋

As we approach the time of year where we instinctively want to cut everything back for the sake of “tidiness,” I implore that you don’t! Our hedgerows in particular are about to come alive with ! These Ivy flowers are about to provide for our later emerging insects, and…

It was all happening in the local culvert at lunchtime.
57 Old Lady gathered on the ceiling. Two optimistically wafting pheromones about, despite the early hour.
Also newly arrived were 2 Peacock and 2 Herald. My first of the season! 🥳

Handy tip for increasing moth trap yields - put other pots nearby to catch things. I put this pheromone trap (without pheromones) beside my trap, hoping that some moths might go in. It worked! Peppered moth was in this but not inside the trap. Plant pots with cones also work.

4am moth trap update: packed with Poplaw Hawks. Also Large Emerald and lots of active Clouded Borders. Won't open it up for another hour or two until they're a bit more settled.

One of three moth traps I'm running tonight at Tentsmuir NNR as part of tomorrow's open day event for the reserve. I've a feeling it's going to be a busy morning! Former NatureScot account BC Scotland

This is one of the first Northern Brown Argus butterflies to be seen in Stirlingshire in a very long time! Last week volunteers and I visited a newly-discovered colony on a steep crag, which may have been clinging on for decades after the butterfly was considered extinct here.
