A great #AntarcticFlags story sent to us today 🧵 This is Hope, and her mum emailed me an amazing story about her Antarctica connections. Her Grandfather Robert Stoneley was a FID in '52 & had a polar medal. Stoneley Point in Whisky Bay is named for him.

New Year, new name? Sometimes we have to update place names when new data comes our way. Satellite imagery recently showed us that Gooden Point on King George Island is actually an island rather than a point! Gooden Island is now marked on the South Shetland Islands 1:200000 map.

The vast new Brunt Ice Shelf #iceberg has been officially named #A81 - very catchy. 📸 also NEW: Sentinel-1 radar image of the new iceberg provided by Copernicus EU and ESA Earth Observation, which shows A81 moving west.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Professor David Vaughan. In 2008, Vaughan Inlet on the Antarctic Peninsula was named in his honour for work on the Antarctic ice sheet and contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Land yet undiscovered. Antarctic Polar Circle map by Philippe Buache geographer. #map of #Antarctic Region from detail from Bouvet de Lozier's expedition 1738-9. Postulates speculates & hypothesized are words describing the map. What can we discover now about the world and us?
