One of the most striking statistics in the 2024 The Royal College of Radiologists workforce census is that “In England in 2023/24, the number of referrals from emergency departments for CT and MRI scans rose by 13%”. 13% in a single year! How can we keep up with the such rapidly growing demand?

Horrifying. Many areas across the UK are still below 95% MMR coverage, including some of our most deprived communities. Measles kills and devastates but is entirely preventable. We need to properly invest in public health and these communities to make the UK measles free again

1/ Now the embargo has lifted, I’ve had time to read the The Leng review in full. While some celebrate minor cosmetic wins, I see the formal entrenchment of a parallel, underqualified medical workforce — built without medical training.

8/ The financial logic here is absurd. Two-year supervised training, enhanced oversight, + higher pay bands - all while refusing full pay restoration for doctors who trained 10+ years. It’s cheaper only if you don’t value safety.

The Leng review has dodged serious qn of Cost Effectiveness. Why spend >£300 MILLION/year+ on the dependent PA/AA staff?? Prof Leng, the former head of NICE, claims she could not figure this out! I have my doubts abt that(🤔), but it shows this Review is not the end of the debate!

The Royal College of Radiologists according to your documents you don’t support ANY type of radiation requests- both ionising and non ionising . PAs have been proven to increase unnecessary referrals for imaging Please don’t allow them to do ANY requests of any kind . They are assistants

The Leng Review - the independent review of the physician associate and anaesthesia associate roles - has now been published. We know many of you have been waiting for these findings to be announced. We really understand just how important this issue is. (1/2)

Radiology is not an appropriate specialty for a non-medically trained healthcare worker Physician’s Assistants should not be able to request any form of imaging There, fixed it for you The Royal College of Radiologists

Dr Huw The Royal College of Radiologists There are many nurses requesting XRs, and CTs are requested for anything and everything these days. How many cancers are caused each year by radiological examinations each year in the UK? Why does it matter stopping a PA from requesting? Does anyone pay attention to IRMER?

The introduction of Physician Associates in the NHS has raised serious concerns among some of our members. We support several changes the Leng Review has proposed, but there's still work to be done to define how PAs work with our specialties. Read more: rcr.ac.uk/news-policy/la…

The derogation granted to Kings College Hospital for a Radiology SpR, has been revoked for both today and tomorrow. This is due to a false submission of accurate staffing levels. Either local management were unaware they had sufficient cover, or they deliberately misled us.
